Young voice teacher asking for advice on Vibrato.

Tuesday, March 1st, 2011

Hi Ariella! I have a question for you. I am a recent college graduate with a degree in vocal performance. I am teaching voice lessons to a student right and I am struggling as to how to go about teaching her vibrato. From listening to her sing, I don’t hear any vibrato present in her sound. Do you have any techniques/teaching methods you could share with me? Any advice you can give me would be very much appreciated! Sincerely, Anandi

Hi Anandi,

Welcome to my profession!  :)  Well, everyone is born with their own natural vibrato, as you know I’m sure.  My thought is that vocal tension can inhibit the vibrato as well as exaggerate it.

Finding the perfect balance is easier for some than others.  Keep working on releasing your students voice, especially front he tension in her solar plexus area.  You can even have her hold a note while deeply massaging the muscle just below the solar plexus.  Then try the same thing and try to release  the tension in her shoulders.  Have her drop at her waist and go for the notes, see if any of these things allows for more of the natural vibrato to come in.  Once something works a bit, you will be on the right path.
Free singing, free tension.
Good luck!

Please keep in touch if you have any more questions!

Do you think you could make a CD that focuses on vibrato?- Shaune

Hi Shaune,

I have no plans for a cd that focuses on vibrato at this time.  What exactly are you trying to learn about it?  The vibrato is a natural occurrence in the voice.  Everyone’s is a little different.  Wen you have a lot of tongue and jaw or jaw tension often times it affected your vibrato.  Different styles call for different levels of vibrato but in general you should work on healthy singing.  When you are singing natural and free of tension your natural vibrato should come through appropriately.
If you are looking for further information let me know.  Thanks
Ariella

Wanting to add “Reverb” to the voice.

My pitch is fine, am interested in adding reverb to my voice.

Nancy

Hi Nancy,
Sounds like you are looking to add vibrato to your voice.  I just blogged about this a few weeks ago, please check out the article in my blog for some more detail.  But in general, you can unlock vibrato by release tension in your muscles when you sing.  This is something that would be ideal working with a voice teacher or doing my Vocal assessments.  You need to be heard and assessed to see how much natural vibrato is coming through and why some of it may be being held back.
You can not fake vibrato and everyone has a different level of it.  Some people’s are more like a flutter or bell and others naturally have a straighter tone.
Again, being assessed by a professional would be a great way to start even if only one time just to check where you are at.  If you are interested I offer “Your Vocal Assessment” on my site where you send me a link or mp3 of your voice and I work with you as a “virtual voice teacher”.  This way you can sign up for one lesson or many without the commitment of a teacher.

I apologize if this answer is not totally satisfying.  Certain issues have straight answers and others need to be evaluated before answered.  I hope you understand.  Thanks!
