The “Zone”
I was inspired to write this while watching one of the final episodes of Battle Star Gallactica the other night (please don’t judge my love for science fiction). One of the characters was being interviewed about what he loved about the sport that he played. He proceeded to explain how it was for the thrill of the perfect hit or catch and all that it took to create a moment like that for him. His words (spoken much more eloquently) immediately sang to me about what it is that is so thrilling about singing well. Some people call this the zone.
As I’ve said many times, singing is an athletic experience for the body when done right. But there is also something that is not explainable that needs to occur for the perfect note, line, song, or performance and that is a bit of “magic”. You don’t always know if you are going to get it either. When you do have it it is like you are gliding across the music as you sing it.
You’ve probably experienced it if you have performed. Sometimes you sing well, and sometimes your voice just soars so free it is almost out of your body. The thrill of it is extremely powerful. I guess that is partially why we keep going back for more. I can’t say that endorphins are being released necessarily but it does give you a high.
How to get that feeling? Honestly who knows exactly. I still can’t predict when it will or will not happen for me. I performed yesterday and the magic did happen, but in rehearsal I didn’t feel it at all.
What you can do is prepare, practice, get solid tecqunique and hope to experience it. I’m not saying you can’t sing well all the time, but there are those extra special moments when everything just works like Magic that makes it all worth it.
