Sorry, you can’t “MAKE” your voice work
Sunday, August 24th, 2008What? – You may say to that title. I’m sorry, but you can’t “make” your voice be beautiful. That is what is so hard about singing. Instead you have to “LET” your voice out, semantics you say? No guys, I’m serious.
The reason that singing is so hard is that there is no sure fire way to make it happen perfectly every time you open your mouth- no matter how many things you try, how long you study, or what kind of technique you have.
If you were a weight lifter you could learn, bend at the knee before you lift, put the weight in your legs, keep your stomach activated, and boom up comes the barbell. (Maybe a ridiculous example). But my point is that no matter what, there is a percentage of singing that is just “Magic”.
What you can do is learn how to activate the proper (while inactivating the improper) muscles so that your body is supporting while your sound is free. You can practice so that your body is as prepared as possible.
I always think that you can’t depend on the magic to be there, you can only get out of the way, no forcing, and “Let” the voice out freely so the magic can join in for the ride.
Then why practice you say? The point of practice is that the level of your worst singing will raise the more that you develop as a singer. That is why someone at a highly studied and talented level may sound perfect to you all the time as a listener . Their difference of “magic” is so subtle that only the singer detects it. That is your goal. To raise your worst and “Let” the rest.
This can be an infuriating fact about singing, but the sooner you accept it the freer your singing can be. Learn proper technique so that you set everything up to work right and continue to raise your lowest point of singing. So that eventually you will always sound good- “Magic” or not.
