Sing with your heels on!

I find that I sing the best barefoot.  It seems to help me feel rooted in the ground keeping my feet, leg, and thigh muscles engaged and grounded so that my diaphragmatic muscles are set up to work and support the voice.  But, I rarely (perhaps if I am playing a character in an opera but,) rarely sing out in performance with anything on my feet other than high heels.

High heels actually feel different then no shoes, or sneakers as you all know.  They set your leg differently and take away from that grounded in the earth foot body feeling.  So, don’t forget to practice in them sometimes.  Don’t shock your system by putting them on before an audition without rehearsing in them first.  Also, consider wearing a similar outfit if there is an extreme change in what you might be practicing in.  For example jeans or sweats to gown or skirts.  It is one thing to stand with slightly bent knees with your legs apart in jeans… another in a skirt.  So obviously you need to practice with appropriate dress and posture so that you have memorized the best muscle engagement and support possible so that your voice is as free and clear as possible.

Just something to think about!
