Personality/Charisma vrs. beautiful singing?

Personality/charisma vrs. beautiful singing?

Both would be ideal of course,  the ability to sing beautifully chalk full of personality is the ultimate goal towards your full package as a singer, auditioner and performer.

But how much does personality stand for in singing?  I personally think, that personality , charm, and charisma out way the beautiful voice, when it comes to getting the part.  Just hit a broadway show and you’ll see what I mean.  A lot of the singers there have “character”voices, meaning they just are not the best singers but they play their characters so well through song that they beat out some of the trully great singers in getting the part.

Singing is about capturing your audiences attention through song, the people picked to do it have caught the attention of the casters and directors often with their fabulous charisma and performance abilities.

I know so many singers who work hard on beautiful phrasing and lines in their voice with impeccable technique (of course all extremely important), but I hear paid singers regularly who are not the prettiest sounding people with fabulous personalities selling their roles.

Charismatic folks get picked and they get paid to sing regularly.  Make sure you are working on both your singing technique (try Voice Lessons TO GO- singing lessons on CD for this if you’d like), and your personality, stage presence, and charisma.

6 Different ways to work on your Charisma and Personality when singing.

1.  Take an acting class-  Learn to act, to be real with memorized texts.  This will be a great help when analyzing your own songs to audition and perform with.

2. Take an Improv class-  This is a step further than an acting class.  It is all about, no scripts just improvisation with other actors.  I find every week in an improv class you challange your own comfort zone and peel of more layers to get to your honest core on stage.  This is fabulous in giving you confidence on stage and in life!  If you become free without a script, think of how easy a script (or score) will be!

3. Wake up your face-  make sure you face is alive and involved in the material you are singing.  Be alert and vibrant in your expressions, especially in your eyes.

4.  Relax and be in the moment-  Stop thinking about what you are doing (auditioning, performing etc…), and just be in the moment doing it.  People will feel your commitment to the moment and be drawn in by it.

5. Be honest- From your greeting to your salutation, be yourself.  Don’t put on any fake personas to try and be liked.  Be you, true, and comfortable.  It will be like a breath of fresh air for your auditioners who deal with put on personas all the time.

6. Video tape your self!- record and watch what you do so your can learn.  You might think you are taking grand steps in the personality department, but then you may see that you are lifeless on camera.  Watch, learn, and grow your personality!

Sing well everyone!
