Thank you so much for a simple-to-understand explanation. Your examples are clear and easily understood. Some of the other sites I visited were absolutely confusing to a "non-musician" like me. I love to sing and am trying to grasp some of the finer aspects of vocal music and your answer helps me very much.

This is a very nice post. It is so easy to nurture others, but often we fall short on nurturing ourselves. Recently, I had to muster up the courage to tell someone that came to my house to sing for fun how she was affecting me. (Every time I sang a song, she had a negative comment or a "helpful" comment to make, though I never made anything by nice comments to her. I would never dream of telling someone else how to sing, if I wasn't their teacher or asked for my opinion.)

I told her:
"Music for me is a joy and a comfort. It is something that gives me space to be me. When I have been working on my singing, I have been hearing an internal voice telling me what is wrong with what I am doing. And it is taking the joy from the experience. I do appreciate you and our time together. I would like to ask that suggestions be kept unless asked for. Do you think we could do that?"

I tried to be sensitive to her feelings in how I said my words, but still being true to myself.

She thanked me for my candor. And if she hadn't, I was willing to accept the possibility. In a way, I had nothing to lose by expressing myself to her that was valuable.

The majority of comments that are positive versus the one ill-thought out negative comment is always a struggle for me and probably most people. I think people that say negative comments say more about their flaws than the flaws they are trying to point out in us.

Hi David,
Thank you for your email. I love hearing from people. Regarding singing the 11 different vowels sounds; On my 3rd and 4th Cds the second half of both of them are just the piano accompaniment to all the exercises taught in the first half. Use this accompaniment and put whatever vowel sound you want to work on to them. You can use the same accompaniment to practice all 11 vowels if you want to. Some vowels may be more suited to specific vocalizes and you need to make that call of course.

This is true for all singers who use my CDs. You can practice an ahh on any exercise that I use an ee, just do so in the accompaniment section.

Regarding wishing you could study with me, that is very sweet thank you. You can of course sign up for a Vocal assessment on my site where you send me your voice and questions and I get back to you with my feedback. The other option is skyping voice lessons with me. Contact me if you are interested and we can work out the details.
Good luck David!

Ariella,

This is exactly what I find out after practixing voice lesson in your Pure Vowel CD. Thank a lot for reinforce the thought. I wish I can take private lesson from you. I have read and enjoy every Blogs that you sent.

I sing in Vietnamese, and the lanuguage has 11 vowels compare to 5 of English. How would I handle the other vowels that are not cover in your lecture?

Thanks,

Oh my God Ariella!! I have been waiting and praying for a vocal expert to explain to the few folks that complain about Adam's "scrreching" and "screaming" that he isn't doing that at all, but rather, he is using trained vocal techniques that allow him to sing notes in full or head voice to reach notes that most singers would not even attempt! They do not understand how powerfully significant that is and you do! Thanks and God Bless you! Rose, a true Adam Lambert fan! ( we already have our floor tickets to his July 18th San Diego, AI tour!! YEAAA!)
