The importance of warming-up your voice properly before you spend your day teaching or speaking to large groups.

I just finished teaching a full day of students. Today I had a few Group Sing classes which are composed of a lot of young little singers full of energy and very important things to say (so cute). The classes are in the late afternoons and sometimes after I teach them, my voice hurts.

Yes, me the voice teacher, creator of Voice Lessons To Go, can strain her voice from time to time too .

On the other hand, my voice does not hurt when I properly warm-up before the teaching begins, even if I sing hours before.

I can’t tell you the difference it makes between warming-up my own voice before I teach the class and teaching the class on a cold voice. When I warm my voice up in the morning, it is set up to speak correctly for the whole day. Whether I am teaching groups of 5 year olds or speaking on the telephone.

At the end of a working day, when I have properly warmed- up my voice feels good, when I haven’t it feels tired and out of whack. Sometimes this vocal fatigue can lead into the next day as well, messing up a singing day. The more often I have a tired voice day, the longer it takes to recover. When your voice is fatigued from an event and then you have sing on it you can cause damage- something none of us want.

Sometimes, even I forget, or do not make the time, to warm-up in the morning, and I pay the price for it. I think teaching groups of people is one of the hardest things on your voice, especially when they can be a chatty bunch. I taught in a classroom for many years and found the same thing to be true; I needed to warm-up my voice to get through the class without over-taxing my vocal chords.

Look at it as a positive, the more often you warm-up and train your singing voice, the better shape it will be in for everything as well as singing.

Your singing warm-up will be of great benefit to your speaking voice. Remember they use the same larynx, chords, and muscle support to use them correctly. If you are going to be speaking, do yourself a favor and vocalize beforehand.

It is natural for us when we are not feeling well to speak very poorly. It is really important that you prevent yourself from this. It will delay your vocal recovery once you are feeling better.

It is so easy for us when we are feeling yucky, to speak poorly. Our throats hurt, we are congested, our chords might be a bit swollen, so it really feels so natural for us to speak “heavy and sick sounding”. I say nay!

When you are sick you need to make the opposite effort with your speaking voice than what feels natural. Don’t let your voice give in to the sick, ”lazy speak” that you would like to do. Force yourself rather to speak “over” the cold, gently, and without any pushing, pressing, or sitting on the vocal chords. Keep everything light in your sound.

The reason to do this is for a speedier recovery once you start feeling better. The more you push down into that sick sound, the further you will swell those vocal chords creating an even longer amount of time until your voice is working sweetly for you again.

I am not saying that you can prevent yourself from sounding sick when you are sick, just don’t play into it and add onto it. Keep your voice in a “healthy-speak” mode even if you have tissues stuffed in your nose.

And if it is hard for you to speak correctly, then really try to minimize your speaking until your voice improves.

The more you speak on swollen chords, the longer they will take to heal.

This blog is being written by me 3 days in to a cold. I caught myself day one speaking with a really sick sound. It gets more sympathy of course, and I felt terrible so I was inclined to speak awfully. I realized I was doing it and was easily able to make a shift to speak in a higher, lighter spot. I sounded healthier instantly and helped minimize the damage.

This particular cold has not gone into my voice, and I am pretty sure that by tomorrow I will be back up and running vocally. If I had not shifted my speaking on that first day of being sick, my voice certainly would be feeling the effects for at least a few more days.

You can not prevent hoarseness every time you are sick, but sometimes… you can .

This is something that we have to remind ourselves to do. You never know when you are going to get that singing opportunity, so you must always be thinking about how you can cut down on your singing downtime, even if it only saves you a day. That could be the day when you get called for a great recording, or audition!

Here’s to your health!

The importance of keeping yourself in a regular vocal training regiment. You must be prepared with an in shape voice for that sudden call to sing.

Just because you don’t have something set on the calender to sing does not mean you shouldn’t be training regularly. You never know when you are going to get that call and how much time you are going to have till your first rehearsal or performance. You want to have your voice “locked down and ready to go” at any moment. Your last minute energy should be put into prepping material for a performance, not prepping your instrument.

I’m speaking from my own experiences on this one. I can remember numerous times in my life when I was slacking in my vocal training and received calls for vocally demanding gigs. It is very stressful. I would be stuck learning and memorizing new music while desperately trying to get my voice into pristine vocal shape for it- sometimes with only days to do so. The feeling of dread comes to mind when I think of those times and the stress I was felt. The outcome was often frustrating, because I knew that I could have been better. Remember, nobody is out there thinking how good you could be if only you had some more prep time. They are judging you in the minute they hear you. Your audience will think that you are performing to the best of your capacity whenever they hear you. Make sure they hear you at your best.

It’s time to start building your vocal stamina.

Don’t get caught out of shape. If you are, you will not give your best performance, and you will stress your voice, body, and emotions out trying to get through it.

Rather then waiting till you get hired for a good gig to get into vocal shape, get into great vocal shape so you are ready when you are hired for that great demanding gig!

Singing opportunities will not check your training schedule first. If your hope is to book the “marathon” role, tour, gig, or show- then you need to be prepared vocally for it when it comes. Big singing requires big training. Put yourself in training for that vocal marathon now so you are not off ”your game” when the singing work does come. The healthier and stronger your voice is, the more stamina you will have. The stronger you are as a singer the more able you will be to bounce back from the blows, strains, and over taxing you will be put through in a heavy performance schedule.

Don’t just get in vocal shape, rather, train to be in fantastic vocal shape. Think about all the football, basketball team movies we see, they take the underdog team bring in a new coach and work them to an insane degree, run them, make them do weights, eat healthy, pile on practices that no other teams are required to do. This makes them ready for anything. You can do that for yourself as a singer slowly building stamina with longer vocal warm ups and healthier practices. Start three times a week, then 5 times, then start adding second practices in the evenings etc… Singing through 5 songs then increasing…You will as a result be prepared for anything. Your body will be strong. You will be able to sing out longer.

Prepare yourself for the big. Why do anything less. You will stand out with your great singing and radiate confidence as a result.

Now go Vocalize!!!

Remember when you first wake up in the morning your voice is NOT warmed-up. Just like any other type of athlete, singing is a sport (it happens to be a musical one). It takes the proper muscle support to make it happen correctly. If you were a runner you would not roll out of bed and hit the track, you would stretch and slowly work your body into a real run.

That goes for singing as well. So give your chords a break. In the morning start slow your voice is vulnerable.

Seven tips for your early morning singing warm up:

1. Don’t do that morning grovel speak.- When you first wake up your voice is probably low and a bit grindy. Fight the tendency to have a long discussion like that. Instead speak gently over your gruff sound with a lighter tone until the rest of your sound files in.

2. -Do some gentle yawn sighs (like descending and ascending siren sounds). Use different consonant vowel combinations such as Ma, We, Woo. Brr, and Hmms. Don’t go too high or too low, start with minimal volume and minimal range as you wake your body up.

3. Gentle humming- Do 5 note descending exercises to start , (like on Voice Lessons To GO v.1) then go up five notes down five notes. Then sing an octave stretch Do Mi So Do So Mi Do. Keep it gentle, no big sounds, nothing pushed.

4. Sing in the shower!- The shower is of course a great place to start your “pre-warm-up”. The accoustics in there are fabulous which helps you to relax and sound better which then makes you sing better. Also the steam opens up your resonators and gets everything working spaciously.

6. Do some sort of physical exercise. – Waking up your body is key. A good stretch and work out before a sing is a fabulous way to alert all your muscles in participating in their support of the voice. Plus it gets your breath support active which is imperative.

7. Do a real vocal warm up- my series of Voice Lessons To GO is great for this.- Once pre- warmed, you can do your warm up. It is so great to get this done in the morning because you end up setting your voice in a fabulous place for speaking the rest of the day. Also, you will be ready at any moment the chance to sing may present itself without having to run into a corner for a half an hour to get your sound going.

I realize that you will not be able to fit this all in every morning, but it is a good goal to set for yourself. Pull from the list and do what you can. Maybe doing the yawn sighs when getting ready and then humming in your car on the way to work. Any amount vocal warm up will help you to set your voice on the right path for speaking and keep it there. Remember healthy speaking leads to healthy singing.

Sing well!

What about a great high note makes us so crazed? The anticipation of it, the singing of it on point, and then the release of it done well? I think it is all three and it is quite a thrill. I myself being the highest type of singer, an Operatic Soprano (called a coloratura), know this subject personally.

As a singer of those notes I will say, they are quite a thrill to sing as well, even though the pressure for perfection is strong from your listeners and there are never any guarantees. That is probably why it is so thrilling to listen to- there is such risk to it all.

When done correctly you really get a whole body connection like no other moment in a piece, as you use your body as a vessel for an incredible note to beam out, whether you are belting chest voice or a classical singer hitting a high F.

But high notes need to be sung well or they are just miserable to listen to! Last thing we want is to hear or see any straining on a singer that is going for the golden notes. If when singing them you feel your larynx raising up in your throat to do so, you are not going about it correctly or healthily.

There are definitely things you can do as a singer to minimize the risk of failing at your high notes. On singing a good high note, your body needs to lock down deep- feet, legs, and abdomin to support your vocal chords. The more powerful and alert your body the freer your sound will be.

We also need to access the resonators in our forhead, top of our head, and back of our head. In other words, imagine that there is space all around your head that you need to be creating so that the sound can bouce into and off of it. You don’t want to listen to a note and feel you are at the “top” of it. Rather, you should feel like there is more room for the next note up to come. When it is totally working for me on a piece like Queen of the Night, I feel like I can’t even tell which way the sound is coming out of my head. Like I am singing backwards forward, and all around myself.

So think of the above combination for you high note success- grounded body and sound, tension free larxnx, and space to resonate all around your head. When you find that “pocket” like Adam Lambert, Freddie Mercury, and Joan Sutherland, or Luciano Pavarotti- you are in high note bliss for yourself and your audience.

Remember good singing is about letting your sound release not pushing your sound out- especially on a high note.

*Big recommendation though, until you sort this out for yourself, don’t attempt the big high notes in public. When done wrong, people can be really unforgiving!

Here are some high notes to listen to:

Pavarotti- lay down in heaven for this one. Whether you like Opera or not, his last few notes are going to make your hair raise and your eyes well! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=VATmgtmR5o4

Siobhan Magnus: The crazy note is about 1:20 into this one and is ridiculous!! (in the best way) http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=Rk1nK-W0Da0

Adam Lambert: Thank you to whom ever put this clip together couldn’t be a better example (I’ve already written by Vocal God blog on him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=GkwJURnVGxo

Happy Listening!

Watching Idol last night – third episode of Hollywood week, I was inspired to write after watching Jessica Furney’s rejection from the judges along with her plea to them. She had lost her voice from over singing during the group rehearsals and had to battle that throughout the competition. As a result she pleaded with the judges to keep her saying that she didn’t have a fair opportunity to show herself since she was battling with her voice and it was not fair to compare her to others who weren’t dealing with that.

Well, whether I felt her plea to them was too dramatic or not, I do feel for her. It is one thing to be rejected after showing your best performance, at least then you know they made a choice after seeing the best you. But to have to perform sub par and then to be rejected leaves you filled with regret and frustration, if only they saw what I can really do…

I would imagine that if they were crazed about her from the beginning they would have found a way to keep her fighting vocal strain or not, but it still has got to be a harsh reality for her when she looks back at that group rehearsal and the strain “she allowed ” to be put onto her voice.

Did I say “she allowed” the strain to be put on her voice? - (that’s pretty harsh Ariella Vaccarino the empathetic voice teacher that you are…)

Maybe it is harsh but it is true. We need to protect ourselves as singers. No one will do it for us, no one knows our limitations except us. It is so important singers that you save the juice for the right moment. Like any athlete, we can only use our correct muscles for so long before we strain and thus compromise them. Singing has its limitations, you as a good singer need to learn to feel them and to listen to them, no matter the circumstance.

“Marking“ is a term that we use when not singing out. Some people are better at it than others. Essentially you sing down the octave, or with half a voice, or speak gently in tempo to mark the vocals while learning the harmonies, dance moves, blocking, or trying to memorize lyrics. I am not referring to whispering which is very harsh on the voice, rather, gentle singing- no powerhouse sound.

This is what you need to do in a situation when you are repeating a song to get through a rehearsal. Especially when you have a lot of important solo singing coming up. I am not saying you should be marking your chior rehearsals. If you are rehearsing to work on the sound then by all means sing. But, when a performance is pending you have to be protective and only give when the judges are listening.

I am sure that was a hard thing to do for the singers during group rehearsals on American Idol- they want to be impressing everyone around them, make their mark, stand out to be filmed etc… but, like Jessica Furley, they needed to weigh the whole week of singing- not just the moment of singing.

As a professional singer, you need to learn how to “mark”, but like everything, it takes practice. If you don’t do it right you could strain your voice. So practice it every once in a while by singing light, half voiced, with no pressure on any muscles when learning or going through your own music.

I feel for Jessica Furney because she will never have peace in her mind that she was rejected for a fair reason-”if only they knew what I could really do...” That will play in her mind for a long time- a really horrible feeling that I am sure most of us performers have had. Hopefully she will find a way to take the experience as a positive for all her exposer and be dignified about the results.

Just a quick reminder to all my football fans out there. If you are interested in singing, then you need to think about protecting your voice. That means all the time, even during your favorite Super Bowl party. And if by any chance you actually have tickets to the event, amazing, but you are in triple vocal danger from the average party goer.

In general if you are at a super bowl party, just watch the screaming. Make sure you are supporting your voice at all times from your diaphragm even during the craziest play.

Yelling or talking over a crowd to be heard is really one of the worst things you can do for your voice. It completely knocks your voice out of wack and swells your chords. Don’t try and yell over people to be heard. Either wait for a quiet moment to speak, or speak at a normal volume closer to someone, instead of across the room. Also, seriously, why not warm up your voice, www.voicelessonstogo.com, before you go so that you are in a good spot vocally when you get there.

This advice is even more important if you have a singing gig coming up. Your voice will recover from the event within a few days, but if you have some big singing to do afterwards, you could start the beginings of a bad problem. If your chords are swollen and you sing on them you will use your throat muscles more than normally and create more swelling, maybe even vocal noduals. So be careful.

Support with your voice when you show your team support singers!
