Use your body as your microphone singers- you were born to amplify!!

Tuesday, June 1st, 2010

It is great that we have microphones and there are great things that we can do with them as a tool, but it is also important not to rely on them to give you a full sound.  You need to learn how to use your body to amplify your own voice to its fullest capacity.

Myself being an opera singer, I am actually a bit of a stranger to a microphone.  If you ever have seen an Opera you will notice that no one is holding a microphone.  The singers are actually not supposed to be amplified.  Sometimes though depending on the forum in which they are singing acoustically they are amplified with over head microphones when necessary. (Not every performance venue is built for sole acoustic singing these days.)

I am not asking any non-Opera singers out there to become opera singers.  What I do suggest is to start treating your sound like one.  Why expect anything less of your own voice and what it can do for you?

Your body is filled so many natural resonators.  Learning to access them and their sound capacity will make you such a stronger singer.  I would suggest two of my Voice Lessons To Go CDs for this development:

1. v.3 Pure Vowels- this CD puts vocalizes to the different vowel sounds we sing in.  Concentrating on filling your body and resonators with each full complete vowel should help you to develop deeper into the caverns of your resonators.

2.  v.4 Stamina- this CD is a real workout for singers.  Start slow with it, only take on what feels good in your voice and slowly build your endurance with this.

Some Concepts to think about when singing

*Imagine that you are singing to the person in the back of the theater not the first row.

*As you sing through your songs and your vocalizes envision that your sound comes out of you all around your head and body.  Not just in front or  behind you but around you.  Fill the space in your body.  There is no pushing allowed.  You need to “let” the sound release.

*Your microphone should be the “cherry” on top, not the necessity.

*Do real vocal training.  Even if you are a lounge singer.  Train yourself on the highest level so that your performances with a microphone are a breeze to you.

Something to think about singers.
